I really wish we could make the service! Val, we will soon see Rick in Heaven... I'm not too sure we will be able to keep up with him, though! -- Or even catch him!

Anyway, we just wanted you and the kids to know that we were thinking of you and we do every day. Have a safe trip up to Greenwood. We will be with you in our hearts.

My heart and prayers go out to his family. I lost my grandmother to the same disease and I know from that experience what a truly heartless and painful disease that it can be. God bless you. May his soul rest in peace.

I just read about his unbelievable trek accross the country in which he helped to raise 12k for colon cancer research. I am grateful to him for that because my 28 year old cousin just found out he has this terrible disease. He is a husband and a father of four. I hope and pray he fights, and I know that because of Rick's walk many like my cousin have hope. My prayers are with the family.

My heart goes out to his family and friends. I read about his journey across the nation and I think that it takes someone amazing to do all that he did My best friend's grandmother passed away because of the same illness. And she was a great person. My prayers go out to his family.

I was just reading about Mr. Hammersley on MSN about walking across America. I was hoping to read about his walk down HWY 281 since I drive it in Texas. At least now when I make that drive I'll always think of his story. He will be in my heart.

I just read about Rick's walk on MSN and wanted to know more, which brought me to this site. I was shocked and saddened to learn of his passing and read the story to my husband. We were both very touched and believe Rick's story, cause and spirit will continue to inspire many others. His work here on Earth may be complete but lives on and thrives through those he touched.

My deepest condolences to hear of Mr. Hammersley's passing. My thoughts are with everyone who held him near and dear. I too was brought here by the recent MSN article and was absolutely crushed to hear this tragic news.

Belatedly, but perhaps of use...

Little Father, by Li-Young Lee

I buried my father
in the sky.
Since then, the birds
clean and comb him every morning
and pull the blanket up to his chin
every night.

I buried my father underground.
Since then, my ladders
only climb down,
and all the earth has become a house
whose rooms are the hours, whose doors
stand open at evening, receiving
guest after guest.
Sometimes I see past them
to the tables spread for a wedding feast.

I buried my father in my heart.
Now he grows in me, my strange son,
my little root who won't drink milk,
little pale foot sunk in unheard-of night,
little clock spring newly wet
in the fire, little grape, parent to the future
wine, a son the fruit of his own son,
little father I ransom with my life.
